Now for a little insight into the Epson 9880 printer: This 9880 & 9880 Pro Printers includes the new K3 8 color UltraChrome ink set with the new Vivid magenta and Vivid Light Magentas. These new inks expand the gamut into the reds, magentas and purples, taking away from the orange/yellow sectors. Although we always had issues with magenta casting, new tools in the market allow for custom profiling which better the standard off the shelf profiles Epson supplies making this a truly tunable printer much like the HP Z3100. A little more effort and money on your part, but well worth the extra step to dial in new papers or techniques the Epson allows you play with unlike any other printer on the market. These are not included with the printer, but well worth the time to discuss what they do, how they do it and if they fit with your own work. Several new medias have also hit the market as well, targeted specifically at the fine art photography and Giclee applications these printers have been so widely used for; Baryte paper, litho paper, wide gamut photo stocks, amazing display films, vastly improved proofing stocks and fine art papers with excellent gamut and ink retention. We sell and test many manufactures media and are active in the operation of our customers with recommendations, suggestions and feedback from their and our direct experience. How will this hold up with the introduction of the 11 color 7900 & 9900’s? First, 7880 & 9880s’ are not being discontinued. The 7900/9900’s are targeted at the Pre-Press Graphics market with the addition of the orange and green ink. This helps proofing in taking advantage of the Pantone Hexachrome color scheme which nails about 98% of the Pantone color chart. The integrated black ink system and print head are from the 11880, so basically these are 24†and 44†version of the 11880. SO big inks (775ml) both matte and photo black and the new thin film technology on the heads that help eliminate nozzle clogs from ink build up. Plus 2x the speed of the 7880/9880’s. Our hopes are high these are more competitive color wise with the HP’s. Soon as we get out demo in, know we are sending files to both for comparison. None of that happens until mid to end of November. Oh and for $1200 you can add a spectrophotometer to the 24â€â€¦the 44†upgrade is $2400. Why the difference? I don’t get it. Xrite’s Color Munki for $499 is cheaper, better and calibrates your monitor, so we’ll skip that for now. Gut feel is that for core photo and art markets, the black is the only real needed addition and for the extra $1000 tacked on, well, I’ll let you figure it out. All in all, the 7880/9880’s are alive and well for a long time as the “affordable†Epson that does an amazing job & with the addition of an extra $980 off, its hard to beat. We would welcome the chance to help and we know you will walk away happy to have learned from our enjoyment of these printers.
